The pH is an important water parameter for an aquarium. A numerical scale is used to specify the acidity or basicity (alkalinity) of a liquid. The scale is from 0 to 14, where 7 is considered neutral water, below 7 is acidic water and above 7 is alkaline water.

Fish, in general, usually live in waters with a pH between 5.5 and 8.5. Some species of fish live in more acidic waters, others in more alkaline waters, and there are some species that live in water closer to neutral.

Because the aquarist can lose fish with pH variation. The aquarium is a closed system, but it suffers from chemical variations. The tap water used in replacement usually does not come with the ideal pH for an aquarium. Products used to correct other parameters can cause the pH to suffer a variation.
